Eye tests and prescriptions
16. What happens during a computerised eye test?
We measure your vision with an autorefractometer, refine the result with subjective refraction, check near and distance vision, then confirm the final prescription with you.
17. How long does an eye test take?
Allow about 20 to 30 minutes, and a little longer if you are being fitted for contact lenses or progressive lenses.
18. How often should I have my eyes tested?
Once a year suits most adults, and sooner if your vision changes, you get headaches, or you are struggling with screens.
19. At what age should a child have a first eye test?
Bring children in as soon as you notice squinting, sitting close to screens, head tilting or complaints at school. Many parents start routine checks at four to five years.
20. Do you test children eyes?
Yes, we test children and stock frames sized for younger faces.
21. Will I get a copy of my prescription?
Yes. Your prescription belongs to you and we write it out after the test.
22. Can I use a prescription from another optician?
Yes, bring it in. We will read it, sanity-check the values, and re-test if anything looks unusual.
23. How old can my prescription be?
If it is more than a year old we prefer to re-check before ordering lenses, so you do not pay for the wrong power.
24. What do SPH, CYL and AXIS mean?
SPH is the main lens power, CYL is the amount of astigmatism correction, and AXIS is the orientation in degrees at which that correction sits.
25. What is PD or pupillary distance?

26. What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

Yes, an Ishihara colour vision screening can be done on request.
28. Can you provide an eye test report for a driving licence?

31. What is refraction?
Refraction is the part of the test where you compare lens choices and tell us which is clearer. It converts machine readings into a prescription that actually suits your eyes.
32. Why do my eyes feel tired after screen work?
Long screen sessions reduce blinking and keep your focusing muscles locked at one distance. An up-to-date prescription, an anti-reflective coating and regular breaks all help.
33. What is presbyopia?
From around the age of forty the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, so close work gets harder. Reading, bifocal or progressive lenses solve it.
34. What is astigmatism?
